Republicans have taken political aim at Canada ever since Donald Trump won the U.S. presidency in 2016, which isn’t entirely surprising since the country has been led by Justin Trudeau, a left-leaning Prime Minister.
On Monday, insult was added to injury when Canadians were excluded from being able to purchase tickets to see the Florida Panthers play the Toronto Maple Leafs at the FLA Live Arena for game three of the NHL playoff game — at least for the first 24-hours after the tickets went on sale Monday.
Politics: A Fickle Thing
Ticketmaster’s decision to exclude Canadians from being able to purchase tickets to the game, which some claim may be due to an influx of fans cheering the Leafs on to help them win, comes amid Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis trailing in the polls against Trump.
Although DeSantis has hit back at the Panthers before, claiming their inclusive initiatives are ”too exclusive,” according to the Guardian, he has yet to make a statement against the NHL team’s decision to block Canadian’s from attending the game.
When the NHL elevated its calls for a diverse All-Star game weekend in Sunrise in January, by giving precedence to minorities, DeSantis lashed out at the league. At that time, DeSantis’s press secretary, Bryan Griffin asked that the NHL “remove and denounce” the “prohibitions it has imposed” on attendees, according to the outlet.
At 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Panthers will play against the Leafs in round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs in Toronto. Many Canadians may find it hard to make it game three on the weekend, however, considering they won’t be able to buy tickets for the event in the Sunrise State until Tuesday morning — if any tickets are left.
The Leafs haven’t made it to a round two game series since 2004. The Panthers upset the Boston Bruins in round one on Sunday and competed in the same series last year, where the team was swept by Tampa Bay 4-0.
While being excluded from purchasing tickets to the NHL game, Canadian citizens were spared the right-wing call for the U.S. to invade their country. Following the removal of Fox News host Tucker Carlson, the network has decided against airing a documentary aimed at exploring whether it’s necessary to rescue Canada from the “tyranny” caused by Trudeau, according to The Canadian Press.
Carlson, whose documentary was originally set to air on Monday evening, often took the time at Fox to denounce Canada’s liberal government, and was a vocal supporter of the freedom convoy, which shut down the nation’s capital last year.
In January, Carlson questioned his fans as to “Why are we not sending an armed force north to liberate Canada from Trudeau? And I mean it.”
According to a Fox News spokesperson who responded to the Canadian outlet: “There are no further episodes of Tucker Carlson Originals running.”
